Business process automation
He has led the automation of business processes so that repeated operational work could run the same way each time. The path, the checks and the handovers were set down properly, and each run left a record.
History
For more than two decades James has led projects and teams in information technology. The thread through that time is practical. The technology had to serve the way an organisation works, and the governance around it had to keep decisions accountable.
The early work was delivery. Programmes put systems into service, and he led the teams that ran them. Digital transformation grew from that delivery. Cloud operations followed, including the cost and reliability work that FinOps is concerned with. A strategy counted when the teams could carry it.
The work then turned to how operations were built. Business process automation made repeated work consistent: the steps, the checks and the handovers. He led AI development where it could shorten a task that people still owned. Client intake and onboarding applied that standard to the start of a relationship: how a person or an organisation is received, verified and made ready. Authentication management applied it at scale: identity, access and recovery for large populations, with a record that audit can read.
He has also led Level 3 engineering and Product Operations teams. He moved them from responsive support to an automation-focused way of working. In the first year that reduced human effort by about 40%, cut many out-of-hours events and delivered large efficiencies in team performance.
He has also led boards and committees. That has covered audit and governance together with finance governance. In education, leading those boards has been education trust governance: trust-board level responsibility for organisations of around a thousand staff. The duty is strategy, the stewardship of money and the standard of education, carried with the executive.

He has led AI development for operational use. The aim was to shorten a live task, with a person still accountable for the outcome.
He has led client intake management and onboarding: what is collected at the start, who verifies it and how a client moves from first contact to a relationship that is properly set up. Access was part of that setup from the beginning.
He has led authentication management at scale. Identity, sign-in and recovery for large populations, held so that access stays reliable and the record is fit for audit.
He has led audit and governance across the systems and the boards. The practice is controls, evidence and review, so a decision or a process can still be explained later.
He has led boards and committees, including finance governance. In education this is education trust governance at trust-board level. The duty covers strategy, financial accountability and the standard of education, carried with the executive.
~1,000
Staff under trust-board responsibility
The figure is the scale of organisations in which he has held trust-board level responsibility.
He has aligned technology with how the organisation works. Programmes under his lead have changed delivery and how teams operate.
He has worked on cloud cost, reliability and platform efficiency across modern cloud estates. The practice is keeping spend, capacity and the service in step.
He has led architecture reviews, the integration of systems and the evaluation of tools and partnerships so platforms fit together.
He has run and improved high-volume platforms. The work covers monitoring, transparency and reducing rework so large populations of users, messages and systems stay reliable.
He has practised data security, controls and information risk so access and records stay fit for audit and for safeguarding expectations where those apply.
